Need Halloween Movies? Try the 2010 Korean Horror Movie Festival!

If you want to start your Halloween celebrations early, try catching a movie in Shang Cineplex Cinema 4 from October 27-31 and November 2-4. The Shangri-la Mall will be showcasing 7 Korean horror films! What's more, you can watch them for free!

The event is a partnership between  the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, The Korea-Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc. and The Shangri-la Plaza. Whoever had this great idea is the best!

Out of all the movies, I'm looking forward to watching Epitaph, The Red Shoes as well as Hansel and Gretel.

Cop-out: Rocking Out with Their Glocks Out

With the recent hype surrounding Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, coupled with the disappointed sighs of some (I said SOME, NOT ALL!) who've watched it, I want to give you, the viewer, an option if ever you go to the cinemas and see that nothing else is showing except Alice OR if every seat is filled and you're pressured to do something with your date.

COP-OUT: Rock out with your glock out. How can anyone go wrong with that tagline?

I suggest you watch COP-OUT instead, which stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan (famous for his role in 30 Rock).  This movie is hilarious. Plot is mababaw and sabaw, perfect for one of those Friday nights when you just want to get away from all the pressures of exams, work, anything!

I seriously have no idea why it got such low rates in reviews, but whatever, I suggest you do watch it. This was recommended to me by my blockmates and I am so glad I watched it. You have to watch out for Sean William Scott, he is beyond funny.

Disclaimer though, the movie's R-18, and I think you have to like black jokes if you're going to enjoy it.

Also, I liked this movie more than Alice. So there. I mean Alice was nice and everything, but its just not my thing. I just feel like they focused to much on the effects than creating a stronger story. But that's just me.

Miss You Like Crazy: Does This Poster Make Me Look Fat?

Bea Alonzo should've checked this poster TWICE before agreeing to have it printed: I don't know about you, but that pose makes her look pregnant.

Miss You Like Crazy, the long-awaited couple comeback of John Lloyd-Cruz and Bea Alonzo, known for giving us the legendary characters of Popoy and Basha and the greatest lines ever to hit Philippine cinemas ("You had me at my best, she had me at my worst, but you chose to break my heart."), will grace theaters on February 24, 2010.
The film is directed by Cathy Grace-Molina. Aminin! You'll be watching this, right?

The Brand Spanking New Kimerald Movie: Paano Na Kaya?

I had to take a time-out from my studying just to post this:

My friend from college (and I've known her since high school), Andrea Mangampat has currently added being a 'scriptwriter' to her resume and has churned out the latest Kim-erald movie from Star Cinema!

Don't saaaay it! I know you're going to say something about Gerald's weird shade of brown hair and the matching pink and yellow plaid polo.

Anyway the story is sure to be familiar with movie-goers: the best friend is in love with the best friend, then after the best friend is dumped by his girlfriend, they try to be together but here comes the real challenge...will they be better off as friends or be at their best as lovers?

Although Melissa Ricks still looks her pointy-chinned anorexic self, I will definitely see this movie not only for supporting Andrea, but also because it looks like a great thing to watch after brain-draining exams.

I Love You, Goodbye: Love = Macking Out

I Love You, Goodbye is a movie about Gabby Concepcion and his 3 children played by Angelica Panganiban, Derek Ramsey, and Kim Chiu. Their mother died at a young age and he had to fend by himself for their future.

NOT. Despite the stark age differences (which is the point of the story), the film is a love rectangle between the stars mentioned above. Gabby plays Kim's dad who is Angelica's live-in partner, while Derek plays Angelica's ex-boyfriend and Kim's boy.

(WARNING EXTREME SPOILERS AHEAD, BUT BAH YOU DON'T REALLY CARE 'CAUSE I BET YOU WON'T EVEN WATCH)

As confusing as that might sound, the movie actually has a good story. Its about a much younger more naive girl loving an older man trying to fit in his family (Mamita is love in this movie!).

But then the movie was ruined by 2 things:

1) 1 character had to be hit by a car instead of giving the lead character the chance to decide her fate

2) TOO MUCH MAKING OUT! Does Director Laurice Guillen (who won Best Director in the MMFF Awards) think that just because it's Angelica Panganiban, janggas and galore, the audience would appreciate a 10-min make-out session per guy? Well she's wrong. It would have been preferable to have more of the story unfold then watch either Gabby or Derek attack Angelica's neck--which looked too directed (tilt your head to the right right, now to the left, move your hands up and down his back...now cuuuuurllll your fingers...fweh!).

Angelica plays Liselle well, she deserves that Best Actress award more than Sharon, but as I've said to anyone who would listen (i.e. no one), they would never give it to someone younger if the Megastar is up for the running.

One laugh element is that Matet de Leon is in this movie. Once again, she plays the sidekick noisy best friend. I've never given any complaints for her acting, but its just funny to note that she's been the t0ken best friend even in Juday's movies. Someone give this girl a breaking out movie just like Eugene Domingo!

So for me, I Love You, Goodbye is a nice movie. It can be improved yes, but at least it didn't make me cringe like Mano Po 6 did.

Mano Po 6: Being Chinese Isn't All It's CRACK-ed Up to Be

Okay I just made a joke with the title. Hahaha! Try laughing guys, it helps!

Mano Po 6: A Mother's Love, stars the Megastar Sharon Cuneta with Kris Aquino as her best friend, Christopher de Leon as her husband, Zsa Zsa Padilla as her crazy-ass sister-in-law, and Heart Evangelista as her daughter.

The movie starts off with Sharon about to unveil a new tower she has named after her deceased mother. She uses Mandarin, oh no wait, she just says 'Xiexie' and then proceeds to use English, to thank those (ok I'll be honest, the movie uses a LOT of cheap looking people who don't really look like they deserve to be there) who came. She makes a speech about saying that her mother was her inspiration, and that sadly her children are not there. As an afterthought, she remembers she has one daughter there, in the form of Ciara Sotto.

I'm going to stop with the spoilers and move on to my thoughts.

Firstly, the movie had Christopher de Leon's name top billing the cast, but he was only on for about 10 minutes. On the other hand, Kris Aquino was there for the majority of the movie but only had the heading "WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF".

Second, Zsa Zsa Padilla acting like a crazy ass bitch is okay for the first 40 minutes of the film. But when she's crazy the whole time, it gets tiring. I hope she finds better roles in the future.

Third, why can't the cast learn the proper accent and enunciation of Chinese words? Everyone can learn that even for a few sessions. And if this is a movie about Chinese Filipinos, WHY do they use Mandarin for their personal conversations!? Don't majority of Chinoys speak Fookien? It also really irks me that they only use one-liners of Chinese. Then its English or Tagalog all the way. I get it, they can't speak it at all so they're trying to limit it to more known words (i.e. Piao xi is probably one of them.)

Fourth, they tried to establish Boots Anson-Roa's role as the matriarch of Sharon's family, but they really failed. I guess you can say that she did almost nothing but utter inspirational words to her daughter before she died...wait, hasn't she been the matriach of almost ALL the Mano Po movies? (ok major spoiler there, but if you're still reading this, I bet you won't even watch the movie)

Fifth, yes I am stopping at my fifth point, I would like Regal films, and Mother Lily for that matter, to stop portraying Chinoys in a stereotypical fashion. Or they should just stop the Mano Po series.

To be honest, this installment was definitely better than Mano po 5, which starred Angel Locsin and Richard "I-can't-act-to-save-my-life" Gutierrez which was just horrible. But Heart delivered as a convincing bitchy daughter. I can't say the same for Dennis Trillo because in the middle of the movie I just wanted to lend him my highest pair of heels.

Oh and on a final note, can't they think of a better plotline of how "bad" the bad guy is aside from making the rich Chinoy involved in a drug or trafficking ring? Can't they just make him the bookie for the sports bets or something else?

P.S. Mother Lily firmly believes that Mano Po 6 should've gotten the Best Picture award. Are you kidding me!? The shots were and the sound recording were so bad!

MMFF FILM REVIEWS!

Its that time of the year again when Filipino directors overdo themselves by making more than 1 movie for the season...it's the Metro Manila Filmfest!!!

For those who are unaware what this is, this is done during December 25 until around January 6 where foreign films are blocked off from Philippine theaters and an all Filipino smorgasboard is there for everyone to feast on.

Its secretly my most favorite time of the year because I get to laugh, cry or just scratch my head with everything I see. In support of the festival, Pinay Tinapay will bring you daily reviews of the movies out there. (ok everything maybe except for PANDAY...please don't make me start on my severe hate for Bong Revilla)

Watch Ninja Assassin NOW! (and forget about those stupid vampires please)

All right I'll admit it. I am an avid RAIN (Jung Ji-hoon) fan (omg if you don't know who he is STOP READING THIS--no wait I was only kidding!), I've been his fan ever since he released his "It's Raining" album, have watched all his soaps, his movies, and now that he has had the success of having a starring role in a Hollywood flick, I of course had to support this.

I honestly had second thoughts about watching it, because a lot of reviews compared it to Kill Bill which I detested. I didn't like how it was unnecessarily bloody and gory. But hey, this was Rain, so my sister and I even attended a special screening for Rain fans just to watch it:

I seriously did not expect it to be good. But thank God I was wrong! It wasn't a purely macho flick that only guys would enjoy themselves, it was very entertaining, and the chemistry between the Asian actor and the American actress wasn't forced. The action scenes were great, yes it was pretty bloody, but I thought it was okay because there were so many people getting smacked around anyway.

This post is actually a campaign for you to go out and catch the film while you can. I've already watched it twice, and was surprised that a lot of people were also watching it on a weeknight. It's already on its 2nd week and it's popularity is due to word-of-mouth opinions on how good it is! Go go go waaatch!:D

Eugene Domingo Delivers in Kimmy Dora

Hilarious. Eugene Domingo was finally given her own starring movie and was not designated as the resident sidekick anymore. Ai-Ai de las Alas can now shiver in her throne because there's a new comedy queen in town!

I highly encourage everyone to watch this movie, it is good for your laugh box. But get someone who's game for slapstick comedy.  You will definitely not be disappointed, nor be bored throughout the entire movie. Watch watch watch and support the Filipino film industry!
